Biarritz

Biarritz, west of Bayonne, has a grandiose centre, but has been developed along the coast by residential suburbs. The resort began as a whaling port but was transformed into a playground for the Euroean rich in the 19th century.

Nowadays about a quarter of Biarritz's population are retired people. The town has three good beaches, with the best surfing in Europe, two casinos and one of the last great luxury hotels in France.
